During his three months of full time outpatient therapy at Magee Rehab in Philadelphia, Pat agreed to try art therapy. This was monumental, because prior to his stroke, he couldn't be convinced to play Pictionary or draw a stick figure.
He found it to be enjoyable and helpful and very quickly lost himself to the process. In the months that followed he continued to meet with the art therapist and then eventually transitioned to art classes at the local community art center. Today he defines himself as an artist. His art has brought only positives into his recovery and all of our lives. It offers stress management, self-worth, and relationship building. It is a gift that has changed everything and has, no doubt, provided a venue for the neuroplasticity required for continued healing. |
